Kārlis Vērdiņš
The poet, critic and translator Karlis Verdins was born in 28th July, 1979 in Riga, Latvia. He graduated in cultural theory from the Latvian Academy of Culture. Since 2004, he is working on his doctoral thesis on Latvian prose poetry at the Latvian University. His book reviews and essays regularly appear in Latvian press. Verdins has translated the works of modern English and American poets, as well as other modern European poets. He publishes poetry since 1997 and is the author of two poetry collections. For several years he has worked as an editor for the Latvian Encyclopedia. Karlis Verdins' poetry has been translated into 16 languages and included in the several anthologies, including anthology of young poets from Central and Eastern Europe A Fine Line (Arc Publications, 2004).
Come to Me
Niosłem ci kanapeczkę z serem. Była druga w nocy, wszyscy spali, sklepy zamknięte ale w barze I Love You dostałem kanapeczkę z serem.
Jechałem taksówką z kanapeczką z serem dla ciebie, bo leżałeś tam smutny, może nawet chory, a w domu nie było niczego do jedzenia. Była naprawdę droga, sześć z groszami, ale nie ma sprawy.

Więc byłem w taksówce z małym ajlawju, zgniecionym, prawie zupełnie wystygłym. Ale z jakiegoś powodu nie dojechałem do domu. Trafiłem gdzieś, gdzie wszyscy byli uchachani i błyskotliwi, i potwornie głodni. Więc piłem i śpiewałem, ale zachowałem moją kanapeczkę.

Dopiero na trzeci dzień mogłem cię nią nakarmić, ale byłeś taki wściekły, że zjadłeś kanapeczkę nawet na nią nie patrząc. Gdybym miał więcej odwagi, powiedziałbym: ale wiesz że cię kocham, wiesz, że cię uwielbiam. Nie każ mi tego więcej powtarzać.
